this is not the consolatory obama that came in january 2011 with that need that he knew he was chasing. that he was going to have to work together with the republicans. a somewhat toned down barack obama from the 2012 state of the union trying to talk to the voters, set the tone for the campaign. he wanted to deliver this. hey, guys, we have to do some of these votes. i wonder, they have a lot of what i would call very well pull tests. the issue that they hit on on education and the economy in particular, things like universal prepaid, raising the minimum wage, these are tangible items that average, middle-class families listening to this , speech. i have a feeling that could resonate very well. they accomplish what they wanted to do, which is talk about the economy in simpler terms over the head of washington. >> chuck todd, thank you for joining us. >> all right. >> joining us from san antonio, texas, the mayor of san antonio. mayor castro, thank you for joining us. >> let me ask you about the word comprehensive. we have all been if through watching the attempt by the government to reform immigration

, just a second or two shy of one hour, president obama delivers his fifth state of the union address. the first state of the union of his second term in office after having been re-elected in november. it is a speech that touched on so many domestic issues, principally first and foremost the budget deficit. went through a list of other issues from energy to manufacturing, touched on foreign policy and at the end reached, i think it's fair to say, an emotional crescendo when he talked about gun violence in america and recognized a number of individuals there in the house chamber who have been touched by gun violence. either they're the survivors, surviving family members or who themselves have been victims of gun violence. mark, we were counting, i think, as he went through... i know i made some notes. almost a dozen new initiatives the president announced on everything from international trade to higher education to doing something about the voting experience in america. it seemed like the president was trying to inject some energy into his second term. >> i agree wu, judy. i just wa

president obama delivered his first state of the union address since his re-election. seated among the lerkz and house chambers were americans who symbolize the the priorities including young undocumented immigrants and victims of begun vie -- gun violence. he became emotional preventing further shootings just as he was in the aftermath of sandy hook. he sought his vision for a stronger middle class. he spoke of immigration reform, raising the minimum wage and energy independence. quoted john f. kennedy 1962 speech saying the substitution makes us not rivals for power but partners for progress. you agenda he made few concessions to republicans. it remans to be seen whether the president can break away from the bitter partisanship and dysfunction of his first term and whether he can strike the grand bargains the country needs. >> the greatest nation on worth cannot keep conducting its business by drifting from one manufactured crises to the next we can't do it.
